Pysanka: These decorated eggs are believed to have mystical powers
Ukranian Easter eggs, called pysanka, are delicate, beautiful things. And, at their heart, they’re entwined with beliefs that are deep and powerful.
How powerful?
Some believe the fate of the world rests on decorating as many pysanka as possible.
The traditions surrounding pysanka – and egg painting in general – is old, dating back to early Greeks and Romans who painted them red, believing the perfection and power of the egg was a proper tribute to pagan gods. Today, as Eastern European folk art makes a post-Soviet era revival, egg painting is on the rebound.
With Ukrainian pysanka, (or, if you prefer the plural, pysanky) two millennium of Christianity haven’t erased their mystical beginnings and magical appearance.
